What Kind of Potatoes Are Yukon Gold?

Yukon Gold potatoes are recognized for their thin, smooth skin and golden flesh, They are a cross between a yellow potato and a white potato, and they have a slightly sweet, buttery flavor.

They are known as an all-purpose potato. This means you can use them in many dishes, like mashed potatoes, roasted potatoes, and potato salad.

Where to Get Baby Yukon Gold Potatoes

For this recipe, I'm using Melissa's Dutch Yellow Potatoes, a hybrid type of small yellow potato. I purchased them at the grand opening of Publix in Key Largo, our local grocery store.

You can usually find baby Yukon Gold potatoes at most grocery stores. This is especially true for stores with a good produce section.

If your local grocery store doesn't carry them, you can try specialty stores, organic markets, or farmers' markets.

Fun Facts about Yukon Gold Potatoes

  • Yukon Gold potatoes are very versatile in the kitchen. You can boil, mash, roast, fry, or use them in soups and stews.
  • Distinguished by their golden-yellow flesh, unlike traditional brown potatoes, Yukon Golds offer a visually appealing touch to any dish.
  • With their naturally buttery flavor, Yukon Gold potatoes infuse depth into recipes without requiring excessive fats.
  • These potatoes are the perfect balance between waxy and starchy varieties. Yukon Golds make great mashed potatoes!

STORAGE: When stored in a cool, dark place with good ventilation, small Yukon Gold potatoes can last for several weeks without spoiling.

Ingredients

The best seasoning for baby yellow potatoes is our tasty mix. It includes salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, oregano, and a little cayenne pepper.

This blend closely resembles a French Fry seasoning mixture.

I'm using kosher salt, but you can also use flaked sea salt, Maldon salt, or pink Himalayan salt. If using table salt, reduce the amount slightly due to its finer crystals, which make it saltier.

Whether roasted, mashed, or fried, this seasoning adds delicious savory flavor, with a hint of heat if you include the optional cayenne pepper.

  • Potatoes: Baby Yukon gold potatoes (You can sub multicolor baby potatoes, purple potatoes, red potatoes, or any other variety of baby potatoes.)
  • Oil: olive oil
  • Seasonings: onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper
  • For heat: add a teaspoon of hot pepper sauce or ¼ teaspoon of cayenne pepper

How To Make Seasoned Potatoes

For perfect little roasted potatoes every time:

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and place the baking sheet on the middle rack.
  • Wash the potatoes and pat them dry with paper towels.
  • Slice each potato in half. If there are any very large potatoes in the bag, cut them twice.
  • Measure all of the seasonings into a large mixing bowl. Add the olive oil and whisk until combined.
  • Add the potatoes to the bowl. Use a rubber spatula to mix them well with the seasoning. This helps the seasoning stick to the potatoes, not the bowl.
  • Turn all of the potatoes cut side down on the baking sheet, leaving room between each piece for air to circulate.
  • Roast the potatoes for 30-40 minutes or until they are all golden brown on the cut side. There is no need to toss them while they're roasting.
  • Let rest for five minutes. Season with additional salt if needed.

Top Tips for Roasting Little Potatoes:

  • Do not wash Yukon Gold potatoes until you are ready to cook them.
  • While called "baby," some potatoes may be bigger. Before roasting, halve or quarter the potatoes uniformly.
  • Pat dry the potatoes for maximum crispness.
  • I'm using kosher salt, but you can also try flaked sea salt, Maldon salt, or pink Himalayan salt.
  • Toss the potatoes with a rubber spatula to evenly coat them with seasoning.
  • Make sure the potatoes have enough room around each piece for air to circulate. If they are touching, they will steam.
  • Make sure you are using enough oil. You want to keep the potatoes from drying out.

Summary

This crispy oven-roasted Baby Gold potatoes recipe is made with small Yukon gold potatoes, olive oil, and seasonings. The potatoes come out of the oven fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside.

I'm using Melissa's Baby Yukon Gold Potatoes. You can use any small potatoes for this recipe. They come in all colors: white, yellow, red, and purple.

When at the grocery store, make sure the potatoes feel firm, and look healthy.

Avoid potatoes with any green patches under the skin, as the green indicates solanine, a compound that can be harmful.

Roast seasoned potatoes at 400°F for 30 to 40 minutes until crispy.

Serve these crispy gold potatoes with burgers, fried snapper, or fish tacos. They go great with fish and meats. You can also use them as a breakfast side.

FAQ

Where are Yukon gold potatoes grown?

Yukon Gold potatoes are primarily grown in North America, particularly in Canada and the United States.

Do you need to peel Yukon Gold Potatoes?

Yukon Gold potatoes have thin, tender skins that are entirely edible.

What is the difference between roasting and baking?

Roasting generally takes less time than baking, as the higher heat cooks food more quickly. Baking, especially for baked goods like bread or cakes, often requires longer cooking times to ensure that the interior is fully cooked and the exterior is evenly browned.

Notes

You can substitute Baby Yukon Gold with other small potatoes.
I'm using kosher salt. You can also use flaked sea salt, Malden salt, or pink Himalayan salt. If you're using table salt, use a little bit less than what's called for. Because of the size of the crystals, table salt of finely ground pink salt will be a little saltier.
For heat add a teaspoon of hot sauce, such as Cholula, or a ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper into the oil before adding the potatoes.
