Creamy Horseradish Sauce for Prime Rib

This creamy horseradish sauce for prime rib is bold, tangy, and the perfect match for steak, seafood, and sandwiches. It's the kind of sauce you'll keep in the fridge once you start making it.

Ready in 5 minutes, it adds a sharp, clean finish to rich cuts of beef. It also works well as a dip for cut vegetables.

Made with simple ingredients, it has no preservatives and tastes better than anything from the store.

What is Prepared Horseradish?

Prepared horseradish is grated horseradish root mixed with vinegar and salt to preserve its sharp flavor. Horseradish comes from the same family as mustard, wasabi, and broccoli, and it's known for its strong, pungent bite.

When you mix prepared horseradish with sour cream, it turns into a smooth, zippy sauce. The cream takes the edge off and makes it easier to eat.

It pairs well with standing rib roast, seared New York strip steak, roasted potatoes, and also works as a dip for veggies and seafood.

Ingredients

The best prepared horseradish is in the refrigerated section of the grocery store. You can usually find it in small glass jars. Popular brands include Gold's and Silver Spring.

If you can't find it in the fridge, try shelf-stable prepared horseradish in the condiments aisle.

  • Sour cream (or full fat Greek yogurt as a substitute)
  • Mayonnaise
  • Prepared horseradish - Squeeze out excess liquid before adding so the sauce stays thick. Adjust to taste depending on how strong you like it
  • Dijon mustard
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Lemon juice
  • Sugar
  • Kosher salt and black pepper
  • Fresh chives

How To Make Horseradish Sauce

  • Add the sour cream, mayonnaise, and prepared horseradish to a small bowl. Stir to combine.
  • Mix in the Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, sugar, salt, and black pepper. Stir until smooth.
  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving to let the flavors come together.

Serve with fish, steak, prime rib, or as a dip for vegetables.

Storage

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Give it a quick stir before serving.

What Goes with Horseradish Sauce?

Horseradish sauce pairs well with rich cuts of beef. Serve it with classic prime rib, beef tenderloin,  reverse seared New York strip steak, or pan-seared chuck steak.

It also works on cold sandwiches and wraps, especially with roast beef or ham. You can even spread it on salmon or other fish for a little extra bite.

Try it on a steak sandwich with caramelized onions and toasted bread.

It's also good with seafood like crispy yellowtail sandwiches, fried mahi mahi, and broiled snapper.

You can also stir it into mashed potatoes, deviled eggs, or sweet coleslaw for added flavor. It even makes a good dip for roasted potatoes.

Homemade Horseradish Sauce

This horseradish sauce is made for beef. Serve it with a standing rib roast or a simple pan-seared steak for a classic steakhouse-style meal.

Prepared horseradish is fresh horseradish root mixed with vinegar and salt to hold its heat. When combined with sour cream and mayo, it turns into a smooth, tangy sauce that balances rich meats and seafood.

It's the perfect pairing for smoked salmon, pork tenderloin, baked fish, and wraps. You can stir it into mashed potatoes, deviled eggs, or coleslaw for extra flavor.

Use this sauce for every holiday from Thanksgiving to Christmas, and even as a dip for vegetables, seafood, or roasted potatoes.
