From Holiday Ham to Game Day Sliders
After buying a honey baked ham, I had plenty of leftovers and turned them into these sliders.
The ham also came with a honey mustard sauce, which goes well with the ham and Swiss cheese.
Between the sweet ham and melted cheese, they were downright decadent, and they disappeared fast during the game. Have plenty of napkins ready!
Key Ingredients and Substitutions
See the printable recipe card below for exact amounts.

- Hawaiian rolls - Use a package of soft Hawaiian sweet rolls, keeping them connected so you can slice the whole slab in half. Slider rolls or small potato rolls will also work.
- Ham - Use thick slices of leftover holiday ham or your favorite deli ham. Honey baked ham adds a little extra sweetness. Cut thicker slices into smaller pieces so the sliders are easy to bite into.
- Cheese - Swiss cheese pairs well with ham and honey mustard. Use thin slices for even melting. Provolone, cheddar, or Monterey Jack will also work.
- Honey mustard sauce - Use my homemade honey mustard sauce or your favorite store-bought brand. Spread it inside the rolls before adding the ham and cheese.
- Butter - Melt the butter and brush it lightly over the tops of the rolls before baking.
How to Make Ham and Cheese Sliders
Step 1: Preheat the oven. Heat the oven to 350°F. Line a 9 × 13-inch baking dish with parchment paper or spray the pan with cooking spray.

Step 2: Prepare the rolls. Keeping the Hawaiian rolls together, use a serrated knife to slice the entire package horizontally. Place the bottom half in the baking dish.

Step 3: Layer the ham and cheese. Spread the honey mustard sauce over the cut side of the bottom rolls. Arrange 6 slices of Swiss cheese over the sauce. Add the sliced ham, folding the pieces as needed. Top with the remaining 6 slices of cheese, then replace the top half of the rolls.

Step 4: Butter the rolls. Melt the butter, then brush it lightly over the tops. Sprinkle evenly with poppy seeds.

Step 5: Bake the sliders. Cover loosely with aluminum foil and bake for 15-20 minutes, until the cheese is melted and the ham is hot. Remove the foil and bake for another 5-8 minutes, until the tops are golden brown.

Step 6: Slice and serve. Allow the sliders to rest for a few minutes. Cut into individual sandwiches with a serrated knife and serve warm.
Chef's Tips
- Use leftover holiday ham. Thick slices of HoneyBaked Ham make these sandwiches especially good, but thinly sliced deli ham works too.
- Brush lightly with butter. A thin coating is enough for the tops of the rolls.
- Keep the rolls together. Slice and assemble the entire package as one large sandwich. Cut into individual sliders after baking.
- Use parchment paper. It helps with cleanup, especially with honey mustard inside and butter brushed on top.
- Serve with extra mustard. Whole grain mustard on the side adds a nice contrast to the sweet rolls and rich cheese.
Serving Ideas
These sliders are rich, so I like to serve them with something cool and crunchy. A cold beverage on the side would be nice too.
For game day, pile the sliders on a platter with potato chips and pickles, and let everyone help themselves. Serve with extra honey mustard or whole grain mustard on the side for dipping.
Make Ahead and Storage
You can assemble the sliders several hours ahead of time. Cover and refrigerate them without the butter topping. Brush with melted butter and add the poppy seeds just before baking.
Store leftover sliders in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days. Reheat in a 325°F oven, covered loosely with foil, until warmed through.
