Frozen shrimp is convenient and has a good amount of protein, making it a go-to for a healthy meal.

In fact, frozen shrimp retains nearly all its nutrients, and studies show that it's just as nutritious as fresh shrimp!

Whether you're looking for a lean protein source or a fast dinner solution, frozen shrimp can be an easy weeknight meal for your family.

How Much Protein is in Shrimp?

Frozen shrimp is an excellent source of protein, with 20 grams per 3-ounce serving.

Additionally, it's low in fat and contains essential nutrients like vitamin B12, iodine, and selenium, which support brain function, thyroid health, and metabolism.

Since frozen shrimp is flash-frozen right after being caught, it locks in nutrients and flavor, making it just as healthy as fresh shrimp.

Does Shrimp Have Iodine?

Shrimp is naturally high in iodine, making it a great way to support healthy thyroid function.

Wild-caught shrimp like Key West Pinks are the best choice, not just for their flavor but for their nutritional punch. If you're already cooking with fresh seafood, it's a bonus to know you're getting essential minerals too.

"Iodine is an essential component of thyroid hormones, which regulate metabolism, growth, and development. Insufficient iodine intake impairs the production of these hormones, leading to conditions like hypothyroidism and intellectual impairment."

What to Look for When Purchasing Shrimp

  • If you're buying thawed shrimp at a market, give it a sniff. It should smell like the ocean and not fishy or have any chemical odors! That shrimp at the counter was all thawed from frozen so you might consider buying it frozen.
  • When shopping for frozen shrimp, avoid bags with a block of ice or lots of ice crystals, signs that the shrimp was thawed and refrozen. Look for shrimp that move freely in the bag to get the best flavor and texture.
  • Wild-caught shrimp from the U.S.-especially Key West Pink Shrimp-are a better choice. They have a sweeter flavor, better texture, and they're healthier.

What is IQF Shrimp?

Frozen shrimp is usually IQF (Individually Quick Frozen) to maintain freshness.

Unlike thawed shrimp at the fish counter (which was previously frozen), IQF shrimp can be thawed as needed, ensuring the rest stays fresh in the freezer.

Key West Pink Shrimp

If you're in Florida, look out for Key West Pink Shrimp (Farfantepenaeus duorarum). Our favorite shrimp are known for their sweet flavor. They come from the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and are some of the best shrimp in the world.

Known for their sweet flavor, Key West pinks are easily recognizable by the distinct red dot on their shells. Whether you're grilling, steaming, or sautéing, these shrimp have an excellent texture and add tremendous flavor to any dish! How to Thaw Frozen Shrimp

According to the National Marine Fisheries Service, "U.S. wild-caught pink shrimp is a smart seafood choice because it is sustainably managed and responsibly harvested under U.S. regulations."

How to Thaw Shrimp

To get the best results, thaw your shrimp properly.

  • Quick Thaw: Place shrimp in a bowl of cold water for 20 minutes.
  • Overnight Thaw: Leave shrimp in the fridge overnight.

Avoid thawing shrimp in the microwave or on the countertop. You can easily ruin the texture.

Fish and shellfish contain high-quality protein and other essential nutrients and are an important part of a healthful diet. In fact, a well-balanced diet that includes a variety of fish and shellfish can contribute to heart health and aid in children's proper growth and development.
