Is Fish Gluten-Free?

Yes! Fish is naturally gluten-free, but breading, sauces, and sides can contain hidden gluten. Our gluten-free recipes keeps meals fresh, tasty, and safe for everyone.

A gluten-free diet means avoiding gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye.

For people with celiac disease, gluten causes an immune response.

This response damages the small intestine and leads to digestive problems and nutrient deficiencies.

Even those without celiac may feel better avoiding gluten, making fresh, unprocessed fish a great choice.

How Do I Know So Much About Gluten?

About 15 years ago, I worked as a chef at Whole Foods Market on Long Island. That's where I really dove into gluten-free eating.

I stopped eating gluten myself and, after a short detox, I felt like a million bucks.

At the store, I helped customers find gluten-free products and worked with small brands to get their items on the shelves. I even hosted gluten-free events that drew people from all over New York.

At the store, we made one of the first gluten-free sections. Customers were very thankful. Now, most grocery stores have gluten-free options mixed in with everything else, but a few years ago it wasn't so easy.

I now live in Key Largo, Florida, where fresh fish is all around. Last weekend, we caught spiny lobsters from the Florida Bay!

Fish is naturally gluten-free, unlike processed foods.

When I eat fish, I feel amazing! How about you?

Top Tips For Cooking Fish

Fresh is best! Come to the Keys-we'll cook! If you live on the coast or near the Gulf, the Pacific, or Atlantic, get fresh fish.

At the market, ask to smell the fish. No, it's not weird! Fresh fish shouldn't smell fishy. The same goes for shrimp, scallops, and other seafood. If it has a strong odor, check if they have a frozen option instead.

When buying frozen fish, look for "Product of the USA" 🇺🇸 and make sure it says wild-caught. If it's not, it likely comes from a fish farm.

Farmed fish are kept close together. They are fed a diet of animal scraps, grains, and things they wouldn't eat in the wild, like wheat! Tilapia is one of these farmed fish. It's cheap, but not the healthiest choice.

Shrimp farms are everywhere. For the best quality, look for domestic wild-caught shrimp.

Only buy fresh seafood that's kept cold on ice or properly refrigerated. If you're not cooking it right away, store it in the fridge or freeze it immediately.

Thin white fish recipes are interchangeable. I cook a lot of yellowtail snapper, but you can swap it with any thin white fish you have.

The Best Fish Choices

  • Snapper - Thin, mild white fish fillets with a slightly sweet flavor. Look for wild-caught fish, especially from U.S. waters.
  • Mahi Mahi: Firmer than snapper with denser flesh than snapper.
  • Salmon - Rich, buttery, and packed with healthy fats. Wild Alaskan salmon is the best option for sustainability and nutrition.
  • Halibut: A firm, slightly sweet fish.
  • Tilefish - A mild white fish with firm, flaky meat and a slightly sweet taste.
  • Tuna: Sold as steaks, used in sushi, or canned.
  • Cod - A mild, flaky white fish that is thicker than snapper.

Always get the freshest fish available-look for bright, clear eyes and firm flesh.

Wild-caught fish like yellowtail snapper and mahi from well-managed fisheries are excellent sustainable choices!
