My journal includes tips on how you can live a healthy lifestyle, as well as stories from my journey towards bettering myself. It's never been easier or more accessible than now to achieve and maintain personal wellness.
Your body needs nutrients to flourish.
Chips, cookies, cakes, and delicious crispy warm bread from an Italian bakery in Brooklyn (I've been to a lot of those) might be what is causing your rashes, migraines, and lack of motivation.
There is no special cream or a little pill to replace a nutrient-dense diet.
I used to think everything in moderation was the way to live. I stopped eating gluten about a decade ago. In My Journey to Better Health, I wrote about how I detoxed from gluten. The mysterious belly aches I had my whole life, just disappeared after a 21 days of detoxing. It was worth every minute!
After the gluten was out of my body for about a year, I started craving raw vegetables. Of course, I was working at Whole Foods and that helped a lot!
But, after a while, I put all the processed foods behind me, and I went to work on myself. I started cooking tons of vegetables. The more I ate, the better I felt. I started following the Paleo diet and started a yoga practice too!
My dad knew I was watching everything I ate and suggested I watch Know the Cause on TV. He said, "This guy knows what he's talking about!"
My dad was referring to Doug Kaufmann, host of Know the Cause.
I watched 15 minutes of one show, and I knew, just like my dad, this guy knows what he's talking about! I bought one of Kaufmann's books and read it cover to cover. I made a copy of The Phase 1 Diet from the book, and I taped it to my refrigerator door.
The Phase One Diet is all about getting rid of the harmful fungi in your body and changing your diet so you're eating correctly to maintain a good gut biome. There are good and bad bacteria that live in your belly and you must continually fight to find the right balance for your body to thrive.
Have You Considered Mold?
What happens when you get sick, and you go to your doctor who runs up a $10,000 tab and sends you on your way with no diagnosis?
I know more than one person this has happened to! Sometimes doctors just don't know what you have. Maybe you have something they don't look for: fungi.
Invisible Fungi Might Be Growing on Your Food
If you see mold growing on some food in the fridge, you throw it away.
What if your food is fresh out of the package? What if you buy only expensive organic food? It might not be as clean as you think it is.
Peanuts, corn, soy, and wheat, conventional and organic, could produce invisible and odorless mold called mycotoxins.
According to the USDA, Molds on Food: Are They Dangerous?, mycotoxins, are poisonous substances that can make you sick.
Phase One is the most incredible diet ever! To reap the benefits of Phase One, you really have to kick a bunch of bad eating habits and really stay focused. There is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Millions of people have gotten their lives back from following the diet.
Here is an index of easy-to-follow Kaufmann Phase 1 recipes.
You can do Phase One for two weeks, 2 months, or maybe a year, and then come on over to Phase Two!
Phase Two reintroduces some of the higher carbohydrate foods you eliminated on Phase 1, such as cheese and tropical fruits.
By rotating new foods in, one at a time, you can see where your sensitivities are and manage them. I call Phase Two The Ultimate Low-Carb Diet.
Keto is nice and you might lose weight quickly, but Phase One and Phase Two reduce your inflammation and fill your body with nutrients like no other diet. It is more long term and the results are priceless. You will lose weight too!
Use the Kaufmann Phase 2 Recipe index to find all of our favorite recipes.
Homestead is suddenly really cool because it has a Sprouts Farmers Market! I can get lots of organic produce and grass-fed meat and supplements, shampoo, and a few other things. It's about a half-hour north of Key Largo and I go often.
I went in on the day they opened and took some good notes and photos. I love new grocery stores!
